September 2-5, 2024, US-Taiwan Business Council Chairman Keith Krach, USTBC President Rupert Hammond-Chambers, and tech executives traveled to Taiwan for the 2024 technology delegation. The group met with Taiwan President Ching-te Lai and Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao for discussions about technology policy priorities in Taiwan, the impact of U.S. policy on Taiwan’s technology ecosystem, and securing the semiconductor supply chain.

The Council delegation also held meetings with government officials from the Executive Yuan, the Legislative Yuan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. . Additionally, the delegation met and exchanged ideas with the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), representatives from the American Institute in Taiwan, and Taiwan technology company leaders.

The delegation visited Taipei and Kaohsiung to talk about Taiwan’s semiconductor industrial policies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and the status of the U.S.-Taiwan bilateral relationship in the technology sector. Company executives had the opportunity to assess first-hand Taiwan’s reaction to the challenges inherent in de-risking global supply chains while maintaining critical relationships.

The visit was punctuated by a joint event with SEMI at SEMICON Taiwan, where Chairman Krach gave the keynote address.

Issues discussed during the many high-level meetings with Taiwan government officials and business leaders included:

  • The status of the U.S.-Taiwan bilateral relationship in the technology sector
  • The technology policy priorities of the Lai Administration and the Taiwan Legislative Yuan
  • Update on Taiwan’s economic development plans for AI, quantum computing, and other advanced
    technologies
  • Incentives for U.S. companies to invest in Taiwan’s technology sector
  • How Taiwan plans to work with its U.S. and international partners (both governments and companies) to de-
    risk global supply chains
