Council President Rupert Hammond-Chambers on Voice of America Chinese

US-Taiwan Business Council President Rupert Hammond-Chambers appeared on “Voice of America Chinese” on July 21, 2022. He talked about the increase in Chinese military training exercises in the Taiwan Strait, and how the international business community is increasingly concerned about instability in the Taiwan Strait.

Xi Jinping, as Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, has increased his grip on China’s policies, where China is heading, and China’s hawkish military and political relations with the rest of the world – which includes its claim, the Communist Party’s claim, that Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic of China.

[It’s important to look at] what they’re actually doing about it. So not just the rhetoric, but the force modernization and the enormous investment that China is making in its military, the uptick in training around Taiwan – in the air, on the sea – and the way in which Chinese forces are training. All have raised concerns both with governments, the U.S. government and others, but also within the business community about instability in the [Taiwan] Strait.
